If you surveyed the biggest names in the tech industry today, you’d find one thing in common: a steadfast devotion to Agile.

Netflix applies Agile not just in releasing software, but in developing original shows and movies. Amazon ships millions of features every year with Agile practices. And Spotify embraced Agile to out-innovate behemoths like Apple and Google to become the industry leader in music streaming.

But what exactly is Agile? And how does it apply to construction professionals?

If there is one overarching take-away, it is that the principles of Agile all center around one thing: improving communication.

In this series, we’ll be covering a range of Agile topics to help you complete construction projects with fewer headaches, higher profits, and happier customers.

But first, a quick intro: I’m Carson Miller, co-founder of BuildBook along with my brother, Ryan Miller. Over the past couple decades, I’ve been building enterprise software while Ryan has been building luxury custom homes. Between debates over who had the more difficult job (jury’s still out), we’ve marveled at the similarities in our industries: limited time and money, rigid specifications and designs, and a huge need for more effective ways to communicate with clients and teams.

In 2018, we decided to tackle a difficult job together and create BuildBook to apply what I’ve learned from software development to Ryan’s brick-and-mortar construction business.

A few years ago, we started talking about just how much the principles of Agile could be applied to his business - saving both he and his clients untold time, money, and frustration. Ultimately, those conversations culminated in BuildBook - the communication hub for modern construction teams - and set us on a path to dedicate our focus to helping construction teams and their clients around the world build better with less stress.

This series will share what we’ve learned so far from each other, the market, and other construction and software professionals.

First, we’ll outline a set of principles and how they can be applied to residential construction businesses. Then, we’ll cover a variety of tactics that can be implemented in your day-to-day business to deliver more efficiency and value to your projects, your clients, and ultimately your bottom line.

I’d be lying if I said Agile was a magic bullet. But as Ryan and many other BuildBook users have discovered, Agile may become your most powerful — and favorite — construction tool.

You just need to learn how to wield it.
