How to Create a Construction Punch List Template in Google Sheets

Step-by-step instructions on how to create a construction punch list with a free template in Google Sheets

If you’re needing to create a punch list for your construction project, but you don’t have access to Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets is a great option. 

Just like using Excel, Google Sheets allows you the ability to create a construction punch list from scratch or use a pre-made template to get started from. Better yet, Google Sheets is completely free and it’s just as powerful as Excel.

An additional benefit you’ll get from Google Sheets is the ability to easily share and collaborate with other teammates or sub-contractors in real-time on your punch list from anywhere.

While the Google Sheets template library doesn’t offer a punch list template specifically created for construction, they do offer a template that will give a great place to start from.

To get started creating your construction punch list from an existing template in Google Sheets, just follow the step-by-step instructions and images below:

Getting your construction punch list started in Google Sheets

1. Click here to open Google Docs. You’ll need to log in or create a free Google account to get started.
    
2. Open Google Sheets by clicking the 3 lines at the top left and selecting “Sheets".
   
   

3. You should see the template gallery at the top, but if you don’t, click on the main menu at the top right, then “settings,” then check mark “Templates - Display recent templates on home screens.”

4. Click “template gallery” to expand the gallery and see all your options.
   
   

5. Scroll down to the bottom to the “Personal” section and look for the To-do list template, which should be the first option on the top-left.

6. Click on the To-do list template to open the file and get started.
   ‍
   

7. Since this template wasn’t created specifically to be a construction punch list, you’ll likely want to customize it with additional columns to better fit your needs.
   
   To do that, simply highlight column C by clicking on the letter “C” at the top of the spreadsheet. Next, click “insert” from the menu options and select either “column left” or “column right” from the dropdown depending on where you’d like the new column added.

8. Once you’ve made the necessary customizations, you can start filling your punch list items for each column and row.

9. Once your punch list is complete, you can generate a PDF document (File -> Download -> PDF Document) to share with your team and clients.

10. As a final step, be sure to make a copy of this construction punch list (File -> Make A Copy) to create a master construction punch list template that you can continue to reuse . Name it and organize it accordingly within your Google Drive storage structure.
