A submittal is a document or package of documents intended to provide detailed information about the products and materials being supplied for a construction job. A submittal typically includes product data sheets, installation instructions, product certification statements, test reports and other relevant information.
Submittals can also be used to provide proof that products have been approved by the architect or engineer involved in a construction project. In addition to product and materials data, a submittal may also include drawings, samples, material takeoffs, performance specifications and other items required for review prior to installation.
Depending on the scope of work, it is not uncommon for a submittal to comprise anywhere from several hundred to several thousand pages. As part of their quality control process, many contractors will require submittals to be reviewed and approved before any work can proceed on a project.
